BOURKE
A RICH AND COLOURFUL PAST – HOPE FOR A RICH AND COLOURFUL FUTURE

Bourke is an iconic Australian outback town. When Jen was commissioned by the Bourke Shire Council to paint a scene that typified the area, she wanted to show its diversity, uniqueness and rugged beauty. The commissioning was at a time when the town and many in the district were suffering from the hardships of the 2001-2007 drought. As God made a rainbow as a promise to his people that they would not perish, Jen chose to represent Bourke in the colours of the rainbow, not only to express the wonderfully inspiring landscape, but also to encourage the people of Bourke about the hope of their future.
Consisting of seven individually framed paintings, Jen was presented with the challenge of having an artwork that worked compositionally as a whole as well as having each individual painting being a compositional success. Set against the backdrop of the rainbow, Jen achieves this as each painting flows into the next.

The encouragement takes flight
After seeing the artwork as it was being painted at the gallery, the wife of a Bourke shire councilor was inspired to promote Bourke through a ‘Name the Bourke Artwork’ competition. Six Bourke businesses  sponsored a first prize of $1,000 and a scaled reproduction of the artwork for the winner! Karen Moreton from Dubbo had the winning entry.

Bourke: A Vision Splendid
Banjo Paterson’s poem has the line, “And he sees the vision splendid; of the sunlit plains extended….” Jenny’s beautiful artwork does capture the extended sunlit plains and the artwork truely is ‘A Vision Slendid’. Perhaps these very scenes were what Banjo had in mind when he penned these words.
I think it is important that some of Jenny’s original inspiration is captured in the title. Jen would know the Bible verse, ” Without a vision, the people perish.” So the word vision also captures the idea of having a positive outlook and hope for a bright and splendid future.
